What do donuts have to do with German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck? Let me tell you…
There are many stories of people and countries that claim to have invented the donut.
One claim comes from 15th-century Germany. In 1485, the cookbook Kuchenmeisterei aka Mastery of the Kitchen was published in Nuremberg. It was one of the first cookbooks to be printed on Johannes Gutenberg’s revolutionary printing press and contained the first record of a jelly doughnut, “Gefüllte Krapfen.”
The story continues that in 1756, a baker from Berlin was deemed unfit for the Prussian military, but allowed to work as a baker. In the field, he would fry doughnuts over the open fire and fill them with jam because he didn’t have an oven. His comrades named the treats after his hometown, calling them Berliners.
By the end of the century, jelly doughnuts were also called Bismarcken, after the famous German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. According to Leite’s Culinaria, Bismarcks, were a favorite snack of Otto von Bismarck.
Due to the large number of Central European immigrants in the US, jelly doughnuts are known as bismarcks in parts of the American Upper Midwest, and in Alberta and Saskatchewan in Canada.
And that is how a new donut shop in Orem, is connected to Germany.
What:
Delicious donuts and hot chocolate. They happily serve jelly donuts, aka bismarcks.
But their most popular item is old fashion or cake donuts. Their blueberry is awesome.
And maybe taking a cue from the famous Sidecar Donuts in San Diego, they have a sweet and salty donut.
I tried 4 and my favorites were the blueberry and salty.
